What is a merchant surcharge?

The Merchant Surcharge as shown on your invoice is a charge applied by a merchant at the point of sale as a convenience fee for using a credit facility. Note that this is not a charge applied by Fleet Card and we cannot stop merchants from applying the charge, although we actively negotiate with them to keep this as low and infrequent as possible.

This charge varies from merchant to merchant, however all merchants are required to clearly display a notice that a fee is charged and what it is, next to their point of sale terminal. It is the merchant’s responsibility to clearly disclose the fee to the cardholder prior to the completion of the transaction.
